El Paso Downtown Pathways Project
The Downtown Pathways project in El Paso is a great example of how the arts can serve multiple needs and goals within a project. By aligning multiple municipal opportunities, the Pathways project was able to use the arts to transform a public space, enhance pedestrian connectivity, improve public safety, and create a cultural asset downtown.
St. Elizabeth Hospital Redevelopment
Working with artists to create opportunities for resident storytelling has helped Fifth Ward Community Redevelopment Corporation to hold up local histories in their community development work. These stories from the past have helped their redevelopment of a local hospital to be perceived as both a cultural asset from the past and a neighborhood asset for the future.
Waco Sculpture Zoo
When the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020, some of the only activities and points of connection we could safely enjoy were outdoors. Coincidentally, the onset of the pandemic coincided with the opening of Waco’s Sculpture Zoo. The Zoo features 28 animal sculptures along the Brazos River Walk and completes the trail’s art walk from Cameron Park Zoo to the city’s downtown.
Arts!Longview
The City of Longview created a city council liaison on their cultural arts and advisory commission to coordinate between the city’s cultural district, Arts!Longview, and City Council. This unique approach has helped them streamline communication and various procedural processes.
Foundation Communities
For Foundation Communities, what started as small, short-term arts-based community engagement projects has turned into an organization-wide creative placemaking initiative, FC Creates. Building slowly, with deep resident and staff engagement throughout, has been their key to success.
